Jennifer Beattie: Silverware is our Motivation

Manchester City defender Jennifer Beattie was in fine spirits following her sides 2-0 win at home to Reading on Sunday which leaves the blues needing just 5 points to secure their first ever WSL title

Reading had initially coped with City’s threat well until Scottish International Jennifer Beattie broke the deadlock just after half time thanks to a header from a Toni Duggan free kick and Beattie was full of praise for her team mate; “It was all about the delivery to be honest. Toni was brilliant all day so it would have been on us if we didn’t get one from a set-piece.  Thankfully, it went in!

It was Beattie’s third goal for City since joining in 2015; “It doesn’t happen very often! I was just happy to break the deadlock. It was a tight game – once again, the opposition banked up to make things hard for us so it was good to get the goal and then Steph went on to get the second.”

“Every game is massive and we’re pushing for three points in every game. There are three games to go now in the league and we’re going to keep pushing for that title.”

“The best thing is: we’re still not happy and we still think we can get better. We scored two from set-pieces but we want to get better from open play. We’ve got all the quality there. It’s just about making it happen in the final third – and it will happen. We’re happy with the win but we know we can do even better than that.

Manchester City host Arsenal this Sunday in the Semi Final of the Continental Cup but Beattie insisted that City remain focused on the league; “We haven’t really thought about it much – the focus has been game by game. The Reading game is done now and we go on to the cup. Everyone wants to get to the final – that’s what we’re focusing on now – so hopefully, we’ll get through. We want silverware and hopefully, having had that experience does help.”

Prior to a spell in France with Montpellier Beattie had previously been an Arsenal player but denied beating her former club was an additional incentive: “Silverware is motivation. That’s all the motivation we need!”
