WSL | Manchester City 5-1 Yeovil Town

Following their FA Women’s Cup victory at Wembley the following weekend City made six changes with Ellie Roebuck replacing Karen Bardsley and Jane Ross replaced Carli Lloyd up front. In addition there were starts for Georgia Stanway, Jennifer Beattie, Kosovare Asllani and Toni Duggan.

It was Duggan who created the games first chance, following a bright City start, as she ran at the Yeovil defence before curling an effort just over the bar. The deadlock was broken on 11 minutes when Steph Houghton played a quick free kick into the path of Lucy Bronze whose low cross was turned in at the near post by the boot of Annie Heatherson. Seconds later it was 2-0 as Duggan’s lofted ball played in Jill Scott and she finished superbly to lift the ball over the onrushing Megan Walsh.

City went close again on 17 minutes as Duggan did superbly to drive towards the Yeovil defence playing in Kosovare Asllani, the Swedish international slipped before she could turn her effort towards goal before Walsh was forced into a fine save from a Duggan rocket.

Having weather the storm Yeovil found their way back into the game when Jen Beattie’s loose pass fell straight to Lucy Quinn and she finished coolly into the bottom right hand corner beyond a helpless Roebuck.

On 23 minutes City went close again as Ross back heeled the ball into the path of Stanway whose first time effort was superbly tipped over the bar by Walsh.

It was 3-1 on 38 minutes when a superb pass down the right found Stanway whose first time cross found Ross at the near post and she coolly tucked her shot under Walsh. Seconds later Walsh was called into action again from Ross as her first time effort after being played in by Stanway was pushed away by the Yeovil goalkeeper before she did superbly again to hold onto Duggan’s rebound.

Asllani had a great chance to extend City’s lead before half time as she saw her low effort from the edge of the penalty whisker just past the post with City taking a commanding 3-1 lead into half time.

Asllani went close again in the opening minutes of the second half when her cross came off the inside of the post and bounced out. On 53 minutes Scott showed great strength to hold the ball on the turn and force Walsh into another decent stop with a snapshot.

It was 4-1 just after the hour mark when Houghton’s header from a Stanway corner bounced back off the post and Ross tucked home from a yard out. It was 5-1 on 68 minutes when a cross from the left was turned onto the crossbar from the head of Kelly Snook and Asllani was on hand to turn it in on the line.

There was still time for drama at the other end of the field as Roebuck conceded a penalty for a high challenge in the box before diving low to her left to catch Sarah Wiltshire’s low effort.

The final minute saw a red card for Lloyd for an elbow on Annie Heatherson inside the Yeovil penalty area.
